Did You Know? Formerly known as Bytown, Ottawa was incorporated as a city in 1855 and renamed using the
Algonquin word Adàwe, which means "to trade." Paying homage to this history the Adàwe
Pedestrian Crossing currently connects Riverrain and Strathcona parks, and was officially opened in December
2015 to replace a footbridge that had been washed away in 1952.
